We don't use fancy page authoring programs like FrontPage because they write sloppy code. Efficient code comes from a proper understanding of the language itself. Likewise, we keep the graphics simple, small and portable. Regardless of modem speed we are still looking at a stream of ones and zeroes coming through a wire. We believe in processing as much of the data on the server as possible. Therefore, we make use of a variety of techniques such as SSI and CGI scripts written in Perl. Java and JavaScript are downloaded to the web surfer who may not have them enabled in his browser. Even if he does, he may be running an older, much slower machine. And gimmicks? Flash and Shockwave are completely out. There is no better way to get a visitor to turn away than to use technologies that assume your visitors will have fast machines with fast connections.
